Mr. Ioannis Michalakis, a Consultant Breast Surgeon and associate medical director at the Trust, has pioneered a new development in breast reconstruction which is a more efficient and less complex procedure than the traditional method [1]. This innovative technique has been used on more than 200 women, with very good feedback from patients.

The aim of the Trust is to spread this procedure to more women across the country, so that more people can benefit from the life-saving benefits of the new technique [1]. This new surgery technique is known as therapeutic mammaplasty (TM) and is an alternative to mastectomy, however, few well-designed studies have evaluated the success of this approach [2].

To further understand the impact of this procedure, the Trust created a network of breast and plastic surgeons to conduct the iBRA-2 study [3]. The result of the study was very positive, showing the effectiveness of the IBR technique and its potential to improve the delivery of adjuvant treatment.
